Contentment By Eguriase S. M. Okaka Contentment is the feeling of satisfaction and happiness with what one has and with oneself. A person who is content is not desperate about things. However, contentment does not mean that a person should not make genuine efforts to have more things of life but only requires that he or she is not desperate in the efforts he or she makes. A content person cannot say I must get it at all cause. If he does, he is no longer a contented person but a desperate person. Contentment and desperation are two parallel lines which cannot meet in any way. Contented people regard whatever they have as the will of God. This is the key to fulfillment, freedom and security. Let me say here that if contentment is in the life of a person that person is safe from life’s problem which is often cause by anxiety and fear for tomorrow and what it might bring in terms of ones needs or desires. Do you know that a contented man or woman does have anxiety related sickness hypertension because what he gets by his or her efforts is just enough for him or her. Not some who will go out of their way to get what they desire at all cause. Anxiety is a disease and a killer disease for that matter. Do not allow it attack you. Therefore be content. Contentment pays a lot.
Attributes of Contentment Attributes of contentment are those qualities that describe a person who is contented. The attributes of contentment include:  Satisfaction: Satisfaction is a state of being pleased or happy after achieving something. The feeling of satisfaction makes us not to be unduly worried about the things of life that we do not get or have. A satisfy person is necessarily a contented person.  Humility: Humility is the quality of being modest and not having a high opinion about yourself. A humble person respects others and treats them as people of worth. A humble person is a contented person.  Lack of Greed: Greed is the uncontrolled desire to have too much of everything. A contented person only acquires what he or she needs. A contented person is not greedy.  Lack of Envy: Envy is a bad feeling towards another person who has achieved more. An envious person sees anyone who appears to be doing better than him or her as an enemy. A contented person is not an envious person. He or she holds no grudge against any person who is successful or complains about what he or she does not have. He or she wishes everybody well.  Rejection of Corruption: Corruption is any act or behavior that is dishonest or illegal. A contented person has feeling of satisfaction, and, therefore, does not indulge in anything that is dishonest or illegal. Rejection of corruption is an attribute of contentment. Effects of Lack of Contentment on the Society Contentment is very important value that leads to the development of the individual and his or her society. When it is lacking in any society, such a society faces many disastrous consequences such as:  Corruption: One of the major consequences of lack of contentment is corruption. People who black contentment are corrupt, especially those in position of authority, if they are not content. They use public funds for personal interest.  Cheating: This is the act of gaining an advantage in a dishonest way. In a society where people are not contented, cheating is common and people do not get to trust one another.  Armed Robbery: Lack of contentment leads people to take what belongs to others by force and that is robbery. Robbery usually leads to low socio-economic development of a nation.  Prostitution: Prostitution is the act of having sex for money. A prostitute is a person, usually a woman, who indulges in sexual intercourse with another person in exchange for money. Often time, ladies are convinced to go into prostitution for economic reasons and because such ladies are covetous they join the bad wagon of prostitutes and start doing the business. A contented person will not go into prostitution for any reason.  Theft: This is the act of taking secretly, sometime that belongs to another person. As a dishonest act, a contented person will not steal.  Greed: Lack of contentment leads to greed. A greedy person is never contented with what he or she has. He or she is always interested in acquiring more things unnecessarily and most times through dishonest means.  Envy: Lack of contentment breeds envy in the in the society. It makes people think and talk bad about others, thus making harmony and cooperation impossible. A society of envious people finds it difficult to develop. A family with envious people finds it difficult to unite and move forward.  Crises: A society is in crisis if it is in a state of confusion and danger. Lack of content breeds greed, envy, corruption, robbery, and other negative values. A society of people who lack contentment is prone to crisis.  Underdevelopment: Lack of contentment among people in the society and other negative values that go with it promote underdevelopment.
