Dangers of Drug Trafficking By Eguriase S. M. Okaka Meaning of Drug Trafficking A drug is a substance which cures illnesses if taken in the proper way. When taken in an improper manner however, a drug can be very dangerous. In some cases, it leads to instant death. That is why the sale and distribution of drugs is not done carelessly in the society. The government licenses people who sell and distribute drugs after certifying that such people have what it takes to do so. However, despite measures
taken by the government, there are people who sell and distribute drugs without the permission of the government. This is illegal and dangerous. The act of selling drugs without the permission of the government is referred to as drug trafficking. On the other hand, there are substances that referred to as hard drugs. These drugs are very harmful especially to those who consume them. They are, therefore, illegal drugs. Some people buy and sell these hard drugs across national borders. The act of buying and selling of hard drugs across countries is also referred to as drug trafficking. Drug trafficking can also mean the growing, making, transporting, importing, exporting, storing, and selling, of illegal drugs. Reasons for Trafficking in Drugs There are many reasons which account for trafficking in drugs. Some are listed below: • Poverty: People who are poor will do anything to change their economic situation. Because of this, many people traffic in drugs without minding the dangers it poses to the society. • Ignorance: Some people traffic in drugs because they are not aware of the dangers their actions pose to the society and the stiff penalties of the law. • Greed: People who are greedy are necessarily materialistic. They are always too impatient to wait for the reward of honest labor. They get involved in drug trafficking because they want to get rich quick and at any cost. • Unemployment: Unemployment and the feeling of frustration leads people into drug trafficking. • Lucrativeness: Drug trafficking is a lucrative business. The profit often made by traffickers is very huge and people are ready to take the risks just to become wealthy. This means that a lot of money (profit) is made through drug trafficking. But there are many dangers they will not tell you about. We are going to look at some of these dangers below. Dangers of Drug Trafficking The dangers of drug trafficking are many. Some of them are listed below: • Bad Image: Drug trafficking gives a bad image to a country whose citizen’s traffic in drugs. This in turn creates problems for other innocent citizens abroad. • Imprisonment: Drug traffickers are in danger of being arrested and imprisoned. This leads to a waste of time and gives a bad name and image to the traffickers. • Death: In some countries, drug traffickers face the death penalty. Also, some of the people who use these trafficked drugs die in the process.
• Street Gangs: Drugs trafficking leads to the formation of street gangs, who engage in criminal activities e.g. armed robbery, rape. Kidnapping, etc. thereby disturbing the peace of the society. • National insecurity: Due to the fact that many drug traffickers are criminals who travel to many countries, they pose a serious threat to the security of their country. • Negative Effects on the Economic: Drug trafficking involves many young men and women who can be useful to their society but are not, thus, the work force of a nation’s economy suffers. Also extra expenditure of scare resources of the government is spent to set up rehabilitations centers for drug addicts.
