Consequences of Drug Abuse to the society

Drug abuse is injurious to human health and has negative socio-economic consequences on the larger society as well as the international community.
At the individual level, drug abuse may lead to changes in personality, a loss of interest in one’s career goals, insanity and even death. The individual may because an embarrassment to his or her family or friends and ultimately find himself or herself isolated from them.
Other effects of drug abuse on an individual include:
• Weakness in the organs of the body due to destruction of the body cells.
• Malfunctioning of the system.
• Exposure of the body to all forms of diseases.

• An unkempt and dirty appearance.
• Formation of street gangs or ‘area boys’ as they are known in Nigeria.
• Insanity and even death.
At the society level, drug abuse increases the number of unemployed persons who could have contributed to the development of the country. Hence, there is a loss in national revenue. In addition, the need to obtain money by whatever means for ‘the next fix’ increases the rate of violent crimes in our cities, such as bag snatching, armed robbery, and assassination.
At the international level, drug abuse may undermine international friendships between nations due to the violation of the laws of relating to drug use and abuse. Drug abuse also affects the reputation and image of a country whose citizens abuse drugs in the international community. A drug abuser may be imprisoned subjected to other forms of inhuman treatment. Some countries impose death penalty on crimes relating to drug use and abuse.
Criminality has been traced to drugs intake in the society.
Ways of Discouraging Drug Abuse
The following are ways of discouraging abuse in our society are:
• Choosing good friends: People are easily influenced by their peers, especially their friends. As young people, we need to choose friends who will influence us positively, not those that will encourage us to get involved in drug abuse. We must also keep away from friends and relatives with negative behaviors.

• Joining drugs free clubs: Social clubs like Boys Scout, Girls Guild, Rotary club, Lion’s club, etc. these clubs are known for teaching good habits and values to youths.
• Acquiring coping skill: It is important for all persons to develop behavioral patterns that are conductive to our physical, mental well-being. You must be conscious of what is good or bad and act upon it. To do this, you need such skills an assertiveness, refusal/resistant skills problem-solving skills, decision making skills, etc.
• Constructive Use of time: As young people, you must make good use of your time. Join clubs and religious organization that are concerned with your mental and social well-being. Also, engage in regular exercises including sports activity which will keep you physically fit.
