It was made the capital of Nigeria in 1914 following the amalgamation of the Southern and the Northern Protectorates. Lord Fredrick Lugard became the first Governor-General of Nigeria when Lagos was made the federal capital of Nigeria. Before 1914, Lagos had been the crown colony of the British Government. When Nigeria gained independence in 1960, with the creation of states in 1967, Lagos remained the federal capital of Nigeria. Therefore, between 1914 and 1991, Lagos served as an independent state and as a federal capital of Nigeria. The location of the capital of Nigeria in Lagos was Ikoyi.
Abuja and Year of making it Capital Abuja is the current federal capital of Nigeria. The then Head of State, General Murtala Ramat Muhammed proposed the relocation of the federal capital of Nigeria from Lagos to Abuja in 1975. Abuja was eventually made Federal Capital Territory (FCT) of Nigeria in 1991 by General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, the then military Head of State of Nigeria. Before the relocation of the federal capital to Abuja, General Murtala Muhammed set up a commission known as Aguda Commission which was headed by Justice Akintola Aguda. Abuja was eventually chosen as the federal capital of Nigeria as a result of its central location and availability of land for expansion. The location of the federal capital in Abuja is Garki.
