FOR THY MERCY IS GREAT ABOVE THE HEAVEN

SCENE 11

(The scene rises as it reveals Andrew’s well-furnished flat remaining as usual. He enters from the entrance just coming from work he sits down tiredly in the sitting room and yet still thankful to his creator).

Andrew:    What a hectic day at work today. Thank God the meeting with the stockbrokers still ended. Home sweet home! (A demon appears). Let me go to the kitchen to cook something for the stomach and prepare for Bible study too. Thanks for today, Lord!

Demon:     Thank God indeed. Are you seeing what I am seeing or thinking what I am thinking? Come to think of it, you have no reason for thanking God at all. When you just came from work no wife to say welcome darling, or child to say, welcome daddy. At your age? You stay in this big house alone, is that not loneliness. Look at your younger brother he is nursing his third baby now. Look at your mother’s daughter she is nursing her second bouncing baby. What should I say of your course mates you cannot count their babies? Man! How many days do you have to live? Ah! You are of all men, the most miserable.(Andrew sits down, sighs, and he is speechless). Come my friend, there is this lady your father once mentioned and he wants you to get married to. She is fair to behold and to add to that quality, she holds a professional degree in a good field of endeavor. You will like her when you see her. She is very willing to marry you; why not go for her instead? Man of sorrow, think on these things. (Demon disappears living Andrew in deep thought)

Andrew:    I can’t continue to live like this. Besides, nobody lives up to the age of ‘Methuselah’ anymore. That is the more reason why I need to do something now before it becomes too late.

Questions from scene 11

1.    Did Andrew agree with the demon? Discuss.

2.    What is the bone of contention in this scene?

SCENE 12

(The scene rises as it reveals Papa Andrew’s house in the village. He is a fairly old man of fifty-eight years old, married to Mama Andrew and they have Andrew their first child and after so many years of waiting for children, two others came forth. Papa Andrew wants Andrew to get married and give him grandchildren like other of his fellow kinsmen’s children are doing. That is one strong reason why he wants Andrew to get married and give him children that would sustain his posterity. He is not a Christian like Andrew and that is why he does his things in a hurry and never believes in waiting for God at all. He is seen talking to himself in the front of his thatch house while Mama Andrew is seen watching some palm nuts in a corner of the house. The environment reflects the rich culture of the Urhobo people of Delta State of Nigeria. Papa Andrew is well schooled and understands most of the White man’s way of life but Mama Andrew is unschooled but a good mother to her children).

Papa Andrew:    When a man gives birth to a child the child is also expected to give birth to a child too, that way, we could help to preserve posterity. Even in the Holy Book, he says we should go into the world and multiply. That is it, multiply, but why is Andrew preventing me from carrying my grandchildren in the name of waiting on his God? When He says go to the world and multiply or has he not read it in his Bible? ‘Efian’ I say na lie bi dat. The okro tree may overgrow to the highest pinnacle; it will be brought low on the day of harvest. O! That is true! If Andrew thinks he is sensible I am more sensible than he is.  I know what I’ll do.(At that moment a demon appears).I am going to pay Tina’s bride price and send her to Andrew’s house and I‘ll see how the boom will explode. You see, he must get married by hook or by crook. In fact, my lineage will not end with Andrew my son. No never!

Demon:           (Claps) Bravo! Good idea! Fine idea! Go ahead with your plans we are supporting you with all we are.(Mama Andrew enters gazing surprisingly at him still talking to himself).

Papa Andrew:    I gave birth to him when I was still tender and stronger than what it seems now. That’s exactly what I’ll do and get my son out of his dreams.

Mama Andrew:  ‘Oghene biko! So na craze my husband dey so? Why you just dey talk to breeze like dis? If Andrew no gri marry Tina, wey you choose for am make you leave am alone before e matter go cause wahala for you. I use de gods of your fathers take beg you. Dis pikin wey you dey wahala yourself put so, na me carry am for my belly for nine months, I know how de pikin pain me. Biko! Leave Andrew make e follow e God. Leave my pikin alone. I beg you with my life. Biko!

Papa Andrew:    Since you are not seeing the pains of a father here you should leave me to worry about him or else I’ll call on the gods of my fathers to descend on you. You may now go inside and prepare my breakfast.(She refuses to go)

Mama Andrew:  ‘Na good pikin e no bi like other pikin wey we get leave am alone. To wait on God no bi bad thin, abi?

Papa Andrew:    Ibabo! (He drives her away and she runs to the opposite direction)

Demon:           Okri-kpo-kpo kpo-kpo-kpo-kpo!(He disappears)

SCENE 13

(The scene rises as it reveals Pastor Charles’ house still remaining as before. His wife Evangelist Ruth is seen discussing with Sister Mercy a fellow member of the church. Mercy is a youth and she intends to get married like Brother Andrew is intending to do any moment from now but, who will she get married to is the point in question here. Evangelist Ruth is a faithful daughter of Sarah who helps the Pastor in his ministerial work as well as at home that is why she can effectively counsel Sister Mercy).

Mercy:          I have been praying for a life partner for over five years now and it seems I am not getting any repy from God. No suitor seems to be coming my way, not even a whisper. I have become a laughing stock among my peers. Many of them are now carrying their bouncing babies and I am still single. No hope in sight. Evangelist Ruth, I am confused.

Evang. Ruth:  Don’t be confused Sister Mercy.  The devil will always show us pictures of those who we think are better than us, but in reality, we are indeed better than them because they even desire to be like you. That is the irony of life. You see, the devil will always show you pictures of those who are carrying their babies so that you the believer will be frustrated and fall back to the world of sin and miss God’s divine plan for your life. That is his area of specialty.(Mercy listens to her keenly). The most important issue here is to wait on God before taking any decision concerning your marriage. Even you know that the patient dog always eats the fattest bone. If you really wish for the best, you have to wait for it nothing good comes easy. No matter how long and dark the night may be it must surely break into a new day. In fact, the problem with us is that we don’t wish to wait for God for anything concerning our lives; we want to get everything done very fast with or without God’s approval. We want to act or do things according to the dictates of our hearts or feelings, wishes may be wrong. We want to jump into the streets pick anybody in the name of husband or wife. That may be responsible for the divorces and break in marriages today because we refuse to wait for the right time. Teenagers are jumping into our streets getting pregnant for whoever and starting a premature family thinking that that is marriage, after the teenage father had had enough of whatever he jumps out again to look for another and breaks whatever relationship joins them together. I think that is child’s play and not marriage because marriage is a more serious business than what we are seeing today. Marriage is an institution instituted by God the Father for man. Before you can go into this institution you must enroll through the registrar who will, in turn, approve your admission and send an acknowledgment to that effect. In like manner, God is the registrar of this institution and you have applied to Him in your prayers or petitions and you should wait on him for approval and acknowledgment.  Mercy, it pays to wait on God for your husband. The scripture says in Isaiah 40:31 that those who wait for God will renew their strength and shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, and they shall walk and not faint. That is the blessedness which the devil wants to deny you. It pays; it pays to wait on God’s choice for you.

Mercy:          Thank you, Evangelist Ruth. I agree with you in so many ways because your words bring me hope. I can see why you have a happy home.

Evang. Ruth:  If you really desire a happy home like that of me and daddy’s then you really need to wait on the Lord for his choice man for you. (A knock comes in). Please come in the door is opened. (Peter enters, he is very happy).

Peter:           (Sings). You are beautiful beyond description

Too marvelous for words

Too wonderful for comprehension

Like nothing ever seen or heard

Who can grasp Your infinite wisdom?

Who can fathom the depth of your love?

You are beautiful beyond description

Majesty enthrones above……

…….. And I stand, I stand, in awe of you

Only God to whom all praises due

I stand in awe of you.

Evang. Ruth:  Brother Peter what has the Lord done again?

Peter:           God has used Brother Andrew to provide me with a job in his bank.

Mercy:          Praise God, my brother, it is not easy to get jobs these days because of the falling standard of the economy. Well, the population of applicants looking for jobs is more than the job itself. I rejoice with you, Brother Peter.

Peter:           Thank you, Sister Mercy.

Evang. Ruth:  God will bless Brother Andrew for his kindness, he paid your rent a fortnight ago and today it is good news from him again. Congratulations Peter, God has given you a brother and a friend. God bless you, Brother Peter.

Peter:           Thank you, Evangelist Ruth. Where is Pastor?

Evang. Ruth:  He is in the office.

Peter:           Let me go to him now, he should hear this good news too. (He runs out happily).

Mercy:          I just thank God for that brother, he is indeed very lucky.

Evang. Ruth:  You can say that again Sister Mercy. It is God’s special and divine grace on Peter. He is still performing miracles so he is going to do yours.

Mercy:          Amen and Amen! (Prays). O God, show me your mercy!

SCENE 14

(The scene rises as it reveals Andrew’s bedroom. It is early in the morning he is just waking up to salute yet another beautiful day the Lord has made. Instead of praying to thank God for his life and mercies which God has given him, he starts complaining of his sad troubles. Standing up from the bed he moves to the sitting room).

Andrew:    What! What am I doing?  See, I have to sweep the house alone. Wash my clothes and cook alone. Nobody at home to talk to; No wife, no child. When will I get out of this? When will I get married? I was told to wait on the Lord but I am fast losing it. It seems I will try my father’s suggestions. My situation is now like solitary confinement. Life has no rhythm anymore I cannot continue like that my enemies are laughing at me. (Just then a Demon appears)

Demon:     Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! (Laughs). Did the scriptures not advise that it is not good that a man should not live alone?

Andrew:    Yes, o yes!

Demon:     Then why are you not married at your age? Why are you living alone? No wife, no child, man that is too bad, it is against God's wish for man. He said: Go and multiply. Don’t go against posterity. Your life is too dull. If not for this radio and television you would have been talking to yourself like a demented person.

Andrew:    That is true. I now know what to do to save myself urgently from this embarrassment, I will go to my father tell him I am willing to marry his choice for me. That would be easier and quicker than any other method at least she is willing to marry you.

Demon:     Simple as that. Do that immediately. She is ready, very ready to be called after your name.

Andrew:    I will just get ready and go to the village and see my parents, I must do it fast, at least a woman should take care of this house. Tina should be that person. (He goes to his bedroom to get ready for the journey).

SCENE 15

(The scene rises as it reveals Papa Andrew’s house in the village. Papa and Mama Andrew are seen entertaining Papa Tina and his friends and fellow clan’s men in their parlor over a gourd of fresh palm wine locally brewed from one of the palm trees in his compound).

Papa Tina:     In spite of Andrew’s refusal you still went ahead to pay my daughter’s bride price without your son’s consent. At first, I thought you were trying to take a second wife for yourself but for our longtime friendship, I let you have your way knowing full well that you are the wisest man in this path. Anyway, it still beats me hollow to this moment. How you will do it, whether the heavens will give us rain or not is still what I cannot tell.

Papa Andrew:    You should not entertain any atom of fear at all because fear will kill those who are slaves to it. Anytime soon, my son will come and take his wife. You will see how the bomb will explode; ‘It is like setting fire on gun powder and there is going to be an explosion soon. You wait and see how this will happen.

Papa Tina:     I have no cause to doubt you, my friend. You see, our people always say that it is good to listen to words of wisdom especially when it comes from great men like yourself. I believe you if he still refuses to come for his wife we shall go to him in the city instead.

Andrew:          Now, you are talking like the man that you are. If Mohammed will not go to the mountain, then the mountain will come to Mohammed. After twenty-four hours, if Andrew fails to come, I’ll pack Tina’s belongings and Tina herself and we shall together go to him in the city and Tina will live with him as his wife.

Papa Tina:     Exactly my friend. (A knock comes in).

Papa Andrew:   Yes, come in.(Andrew enters to the surprise of all in the house. He carries a big bag containing some gift items for his parents). Who am I seeing?

Papa Tina:     Damn devils! (Shouts). Andrew!

Papa Andrew:    Didn’t I tell you?

Papa Tina:     You did. That is why I always believe you. (Whisper in a low tone).

Andrew:          I greet you, Papa and Mama. (Mama Andrew carries the bag from her son).

Mama Andrew:  Welcome my son. How you dey?

Andrew:          Am fine Mama. (Turns to Papa Tina) I greet you, Sir. How is Tina?

Papa Tina:     She is fine my in-law. She has been waiting earnestly for you.

Andrew:          Is that so? Papa, I am sorry for all the troubles I have caused you, you see, I now realize what you have been trying to say, I need a wife now to keep posterity going on and on.

Papa Andrew:    That is exactly my thought and my point!

Andrew:          I heard you paid Tina’s bride price already.

Papa Andrew:    Yes, my son.

Andrew:          So nothing stops me from taking her as my wife. All the expenses you incur, I will repay them to the last kobo.

Papa Andrew:    Alright my son I know you will.

Papa Tina:     (Hails). The bank, I am even ready to give you my daughter for free if possible. (Smiles). But for tradition's sake, you need to pay something.

Andrew:          That is correct my in-law. Where is my wife?

Papa Andrew:    Here she is. (Calls) Tina come and meet your husband.

Tina:                I’m coming, big papa. (Tina enters from the inner room).

Here comes my son Andrew your husband and Andrew meet Tina your wife.

Tina:              Welcome Andrew my husband.

Andrew:          O Tina my love! (He hugs her).

Papa Tina:     ……..has exploded.

Tina, seeing the beauty and splendor of this flat exclaims).

Tina:          Aha! Is this your house?

Andrew:    Yes, my dearest.

Tina:          Nice place you have here you have done so well for yourself.

Andrew:    You can say that again. (Smiles).

Tina:          My father was right about you being an accomplished banker and I accepted everything he told me and that brought us together.

Andrew:    My father was also right about your beauty. You are really beautiful. Tina, you are elegant.(He hugs her).

Tina:          Andrew my love, I have made the right choice marrying you.

She enters and kneels down before Jahika, the demon of seduction and pride, in the region while he helps her to stand upright).

Jahika:     Well done my faithful servant. Well done! You have accomplished the first phase. You can proceed to the next phase: bring him to us so that we could bind his heart ever to us and make his employers fed up with him and sack him, by so doing, he will be depending on us for his livelihood.(Pause) That way we can keep him ever with us for our day of destruction. Remember our goal is to destroy him. Always remember your target and the reward which awaits you.

Tina:         I will my lord. He is in my hands, never to be set free.

Jahika:     We have no time to waste as far as this assignment is concerned. You may go now and start the next phase immediately.

He is discussing with one of the elders concerning their recent meeting. Elder Landy is one of the faithful members of his church and he is well to do because God has blessed him with riches).

Pastor Charles:     How was your meeting with the elder’s council?

Elder Landy:    It went well Pastor.

Pastor Charles:     So, did the elders still agree on the building project?

Elder Landy:    Yes, Pastor that was one of the success stories of this year’s Elders Council Meeting. Many of the elders agreed to assist the ongoing building project in kind and in cash. We also agreed on our monthly donations to the widows and the motherless baby’s home. For the first time in history, our welfare purse rose to about five million naira, courtesy of Elder Landy and Senior Elder Victor, and others.

Pastor Charles:     Why will God not bless you Elder Landy. You initiated that program and I guess that you are the highest donor there, in fact, God bless all of you.

Elder Landy:    Amen! Let’s thank God for everything because he gave us the power to make wealth and we, in turn, should use it to accomplish his purpose here on earth.

Pastor Charles:     May God richly bless you.

Elder Landy:    Amen. We also looked at the evangelism purse.(Pause) That reminds me. Where is Brother Andrew?

Pastor Charles:     I am still asking myself the same question up to this moment. When I asked Peter about him, he said he had been on three weeks’ vacation which started two weeks ago and that he traveled to the village thereafter. I wonder why Andrew of all people would travel without telling anybody, not even Peter is a colleague.

Elder Landy:    And since then you have not heard from him or see him?

Pastor Charles:     No, not at all.

Elder Lander:   That’s huge!

Pastor Charles:     I am beginning to feel that a strange thing has started with him. That is what my spirit is telling me. If his ways were right he would have told me of this development.

Elder Landy:    You are right Pastor.

Pastor Charles:     I can’t afford to lose a soul to the devil now not like Andrew. Let’s be praying for him. Elder Landy, Andrew is entrapped by some demonic powers.

Elder Landy:    How do you mean? Pastor!

Pastor Charles:     God is not lying to me. I warned him about that lady, called Tina. I wonder what he has been doing in that village. No communication not even with Peter or any other person else.

Elder Landy:    Alright Pastor. I will see him tomorrow, this week is the fourth week, and he should have been back by now or must have resumed work by now.

Pastor Charles:     As soon as you see him, tell him to come and see me.

Elder Landy:    I will Pastor. (Rises to go). Goodbye!

Pastor Charles:     God bless you Elder Landy. (Leaves).

 SCENE 20

(The scene rises as it reveals Andrew’s well-furnished flat. It is early in the morning the next day when Elder Landy visits the couple. Tina is seen coming out of the bedroom into the sitting room still on her night-gown, when she hears a knock at the door).

Tina:              Who is that this early morning, didn’t you sleep at home? (She is angry and the knock comes again). Hold on don’t break my door. I’m coming to open it.(She goes to open the door). Come in. (Elder Landy enters).

Elder Landy:    Good morning lady!(Surprise at her as he begins to stammer). I am Landy Elder Landy.

Tina:              I see! Landy Elder Landy…….Which of them will I take?

Elder Landy:    Sorry please, my name is Elder Landy. (Clearly).

Tina:              I see! So Elder Landy, who are you looking for?

Elder Landy:    I am looking for Andrew my brother.

Tina:              Oh! You mean my husband, please have your sit. Is he expecting you?

Elder Landy:    Not at all. (Nods).

Tina:              Never mind, let me call him. (She goes in and both of them enter sitting close to each other. All the while Elder Landy is looking with surprise at Andrew and Tina).

Elder Landy:    Am I dreaming or what is happening to me? If I am dreaming, please Lord, I want to wake up.

Andrew:        You are not dreaming Elder Landy. You are seeing me and Tina my wife by-gone to bachelorhood. (She hugs him).

Elder Landy:    I never knew you were married. But, why didn’t you invite us not even your pastor or any member of the church? That is too bad brother Andrew.

Andrew:        I’m sorry Elder Landy, it was too urgent.

Elder Landy:    Can you hear yourself talk. (He becomes angry with him). Were you not there when I got married, was the pastor not there and before the congregation of God’s people? (Andrew is gazing into space thoughtfully without altering a word and Tina becomes very angry at him). I am completely amazed at what is going on with you Andrew. Are you still in the faith? Just examine yourself whether you are still in the faith.

Tina:              What Andrew! Who is this guy? What is he talking about? Don’t allow anybody to talk to you in that manner. Besides, it is not their business; it is entirely your own affair. Intruders!  Honey, please say something.

Andrew:        Elder Landy, (He speaks with pride in his heart). I will not take that nonsense from anybody anymore, especially you. I brought you to Christ, can you still remember that, so do not talk to me like you talk to a baby Christian. For goodness sake! (Pause). You can tell your Pastor that Tina is now my wife for better or for worse…….

Tina:              (Completes the word)…….. Till death do us part, according to God’s holy law and thereto I give thee my troth. (She hugs him warmly). Get that into your thick skull Elder Landy.

Elder Landy:    May God open your eyes. (Tina looks at him with contempt and gives a long hiss).

Tina:              Andy, why do you allow him to abuse your wife.

Andrew:        Let him say whatever, that will not make me change my mind about you.

Tina:              Andy, I love you very much. (She hugs him again so that Elder would be jealous of them).

Andrew:        Elder Landy, I think you have over stayed your welcome you may go if you like.(Andrew and Tina enter the bedroom leaving Elder Landy in the sitting room alone).

Elder Landy:    This is not Andrew. Lord, this is not the Andrew I use to know. O, God of my fathers have mercy on him. (He shakes his head and leaves the scene).

We can see a marriage celebration between Andrew and Tina going on in Jahika’s coven, this shows that Andrew has been captured by Tina and her colleagues. They are putting on their wedding garments and sitting comfortably as spouses. Jahika and his co-demons were very happy and were giving a standing ovation as the scene opens).

Jahika:       Once again, welcome my comrade Andrew, you are most welcome.

Andrew:     Doxology, your majesty!

Jahika:       Doxology, great doxology too. Remain faithful to us, we shall give you all that life offers. Tina shall be your faithful wife forever. You can count on her. Now, you are going to celebrate before us. (He beckons). Music!

Elder Landy:    Pastor, its Andrew.

Pastor Charles:     What about him?

Elder Landy:    Andrew is now harboring a woman at home in the name of his wife. What I see about that lady, Pastor, I am sorry to say that she is a demon, a direct daughter of Lucifer the devil, she is possessed by lagoons of demons.

Pastor Charles:     I am not surprised at all, because I have dealt with such cases before and that is why I said Andrew is entrapped. Get the prayer warriors ready; let them start prayers for Andrew I can’t afford to lose any soul to the devil now. I will go to his house now let that demon of a woman confront me. Let me see them face to face and God will deliver Andrew from her entanglements.

Elder Landy:    It shall be so in Jesus' name.
