Ethnic conflict in Nigeria
By Eguriase S. M. Okaka An ethnic conflict is a serious disagreement which may or may not result in prolonged armed struggle between people of different cultural and language group. While the source of the conflict may be political, social or economic, the individuals or groups involved must expressly fight for their ethnic group’s position within the society. Ethnic conflict does not necessarily have to be violent. In a multi-ethnic society where freedom of speech is protected, ethnic conflict can be an everyday feature of plural democracies. For example, ethnic conflict might be a non-violent struggle for resources divided among the ethnic groups. The subject of the confrontation might be directly or symbolically connected to an ethnic group or their identity.
In recent years, Nigeria had witnessed the outbreak of several ethnic conflicts which usually arise from the pursuit of divergent interests, while some old ones had been revived. Among the prominent recent ones are: Yoruba-Hausa community clash in Sagamu Ogun State, Eleme-Okrika in Rivers State, the intermittent clashes in Zango-Kataf in Kaduna State, Tiv-Jukun in Wukari, Taraba State, Itsekiri-Ijaw, Urhobo in Delta State, Aguleri-Umuleri in Anambra State, and Ife-Modakeke in Osun State. Ethnic conflicts in Nigeria and Africa in general arise as a result of scarcity of political resources, multi-culture, religion and activities of militant groups among ethnic states. Another major cause of conflict is fight over resource control especially among ethnic groups that share boundaries. Some minority groups living beside bigger and stronger ethnic communities may feel marginalized in social and political arrangements, or in the sharing of economic resources or political post. This may result in physical conflict or negative emotional feelings against one another, causing destruction of lives and property. However, to avert future occurrence of ethnic conflicts, governments must ensure that all parts of the country are developed, and there is a strong culture of justice and equity in the land.
