Active and Passive Voice

Previously, we have learned about sentences such as:
• Jide locked the door.
• The door was locked by Jide.
The first sentence was an active sentence while the second one is a passive sentence. Remember that the passive sentence is formed first by making the object of the active sentence (the door) become the subject and that you use the be verb (was) with the past participle form of the verb locked.
The following table shows sentences changed from active to passive in the major tenses.
Note that the phrase (by Kate) is optional.
Exercise
Study the following tables and make at least ten sentences from them. The active sentences in Table A have been rewritten in the passive voice in Table B.
Finally, study the following tables. Again, the active voice in Table A has been changed to the passive voice in Table B.
Exercise 1
Change the following sentences from active to passive.
• They make noodles in that factory.
• You must wash your clothes in the laundry.
• They built the television house in the 1950s.
• The candidates will finish their practical by evening.
• They are going to build q new shopping mall for them.
• The gardener must mow the lawn.
• They were eating dinner when I arrived.
• The teacher forced him to leave the class.
• The students made him the class captain.
Exercise 2
Change the following sentences from passive to active. One has been done for you.
1. The locks have been changed by the owner.
Answer: The owner has changed the locks.
• This car was manufactured in Germany by Mercedes Benz.
• The test will be written at 2 O’ clock this afternoon by the students.
• Dirty clothes must not be worn by you.
• You were told to wait here by him.
• Breakfast was being served by them when we arrived.
• Lessons are recorded and posted on the internet by the teachers.
• He was posted president by the electorate.
• She was made to take out the trash by her mother.
• Parents ought to be obeyed by their children.
