DIRECTORIAL CONCEPT/PLAY DIRECTING
DIRECTORIAL CONCEPT
The
directorial concept of a play is the artistic and aesthetic interpretation given
to the play by the director; bring out the message of the play or the central
ideal or theme of the play story using theatrical forces to achieve his main
target.
For example he uses: Actors, Costume.
Lighting, Theatre Management and the type of stage suitable for the production.
He uses the play to pass across a
message and builds the whole play as the architect builds the house and designs
it to a comfortable pattern. We can also say that the style of a character and
his approach when directing a play can be either surrealistic or not.
THE
MESSAGE OF THE DIRECTOR FORMS HIS CONCEPT that is why it is called directorial
concept and this concept involves blocking and it approach.
The director
always appreciates a play before directing it. He should always take into
consideration: the history or period or time of a play before directing it. The
time of a play story will make him to apply the right costume of that period or
time. He looks at the language which is a variable tool of communication to
pass his message across to his audience. He also takes into consideration the
culture of the people.
PLAY DIRECTING
Directing is everything which entails
remembering and understanding a text to be directed. A director has to get his
fact straight when directing.
In play directing the director must
first appreciate the play before going ahead with it directing. The play appreciation often reveals vital
information about the play to be directed since directing is everything meaning
that the director when directing should take everything about the play into a
proper and thorough considerations like:
1. The culture of the play
2. The history of the play
3. The Actors that will act in the play
taking their psychological make-up into note.
4. The costume and make-up
5. The thought/theme
6. The diction or language capability
7. Music and dance
8. Props and sets
9. Area of performance
10. Entrance and exit
11. The expected reaction of the audience
These are many other factors the director should consider when directing
