THE COMMANDMENTS By Eguriase S. M. Okaka God gave Moses the law to give his people on Mount Sinai. The law is known as the Ten Commandments or the Decalogue. The Ten Commandments can be found in the Bible book of Exodus 20:1-11 and Deuteronomy 5:6-22. What is a commandment? Let us see from below: A commandment is an instruction God tells people to follow so that they can be happy. In the Bible, the Ten Commandments contain God’s law given to man. The Ten Commandments is also known as the “Decalogue meaning, ten words”.in the Bible, God gave the people of Israel the Ten Commandments through Moses on Mount Sinai. The laws were written on two tablets of stones to show that it could not be changed. The Ten Commandments teaches us our duties to God and one another. The first four commandments are about our duties to God. While the remaining six, are our duties to one another. This is about our relationship with others. The Ten Commandments is for everyone –parents, teachers, children, kings, presidents, etc. All God’s creatures need these Commandments to live with one another peacefully. The Ten Commandments are as follows:  You shall have no other god before me.  You shall not make for yourself any graven image (idol).  You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.  Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.  Honor your father and your mother that you may live long.  You shall not kill.  You shall not commit adultery.  You shall not steal.  You shall not bear false witness.  You shall not covet your neighbor’s house, wife or property. Any law God gave to man is not grievous. It is for our own good. If there is no law the world would have been like a jungle because nothing to regulate man’s activity. Consider the jungle. Consider the animals in the jungle, because of the absence of law; the lion can decide to kill other animals at its will. Also, consider the world without laws guiding man’s activities. With these laws the world is still unbearable for us, how will be without laws guiding our excesses. Thou shall not kill. Some people still murder their fellow human beings, just to mention a few. Wickedness still persists, but those who obey and keep these commandments are happy indeed. Remember, the wages of sin is death. That can only happen if we disobey the law and live wickedly.
