EXPLANTION OF THE TEN COMMANDMENTS
BY EGURIASE S. M. OKAKA  YOU SHALL HAVE NO OTHER GOD BEFORE ME: This first commandment is for us to be faithful and loyal to God. We should not worship anything apart from God, whether a person, place or thing. Also we should not worship idols but only the true God. We should honor or respect God by being loyal to him.  YOU SHALL NOT MAKE FOR YOURSELF ANY GRAVEN IMAGE: This second commandment is about worship. A graven image is an idol which some people make with their hands to stand as their gods to be worshipped. We should worship only God and not make any image or symbols or representations of him and call it God. We should not bow down to idols.  YOU SHALL NOT TAKE THE NAME OF THE LORD YOUR GOD IN VAIN: The third Commandment is honor your God’s name. To take the name of God in vain is to swear in the name of God to tell the truth and then go ahead to tell lies. God’s name must be respected. He does not want people to use the name in the wrong way. We should not play or joke with his name. When we take the name of God in vain, it means we have no respect for Him.  REMEMBER THE SABBATH TO KEEP IT HOLY: The fourth commandment is to honor your God’s day. This means that a special day, every week should be set aside to rest and worship God. The day is called Sabbath day. Some Christians observe Saturdays as their day of Sabbath e.g. the Seven Day Adventist while others observe Sunday as their Sabbath. Some of the way we can honor God’s day and keep it holy are by doing the following: • Going to the church • Reading the Bible • Praying • Spending time with other Christians etc.  HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER: The fifth commandment is to honor our parents. To honor our parents means show respect for our parents and those in authority such as our elders, leaders, and teachers. The commandment is important because it came with a promise of long life for those who obey. We can honor (respect) our parents, teachers, elders, and those in authority in the following ways: • Obeying them and doing what they ask us to do. • Listening to their rebukes, instructions and corrections. • Talking to them with respect. • Submitting to them. • Not mocking or looking down on them. • Comforting them especially when they are old, thereby making their old age comfortable.  YOU SHOULD NOT KILL: The sixth commandment is to show respect for human life. Life is a gift from God to man. This rule is against the sin of murder or taking people’s life in a way that is unlawful (wrong). We should not kill any human being or ourselves. God wants us to love and not hate. Things that can cause one to kill are anger, bitterness, jealousy, hatred, etc.  YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY: The seventh commandment is respect for marriage, family life and human dignity. Adultery is when a husband becomes unfaithful by sleeping with another woman or a wife becomes unfaithful by sleeping with other men. When this happens men and women lose their self-respect. Committing adultery can lead to violence, divorce etc. Again, we should not sleep with anybody before marriage. When we do that we have committed the sin of fornication.  YOU SHALL NOT STEAL: The eight commandments is respect for people’s property and dignity of labor. This commandment is about honesty . To steal is to take something belongs to another person. We are to show love and respect for others by not stealing their property. We should work hard to earn our living. Stealing can take the following form: • Taking or keeping what belongs to another.(stop) • Robbing a bank. • Stealing from a home, shop, etc. • Borrowing something and not returning it back to the owner. • Cheating at school during exam. Picking things and keeping them without asking for the owner. • Not paying tithes. That is, one-tenth of your salary or anything given to you. Stealing someone’s property can lead to violence.  YOU SHALL NOT BEAR FALSE WITHNESS AGAINST YOUR NEIGHBOR: The ninth commandment is ‘Respect for Truth’. This is, to be truthful. To bear false witness is to tell lies against somebody when we are supposed to tell the truth, so as to destroy his or her character. We should not say thing about people that are not true. People tell lies in different ways such as: • Telling an untrue story about someone. • Making false promises. • Pretending to be nice, etc. God wants us as His children, to commit ourselves to truth and reflect it in everything we do and say.  YOU SHALL NOT COVET YOUR NEIGHBOR’S HOUSE OR WIFE OR PROPERTY: The tenth commandment is respect for people’s property. This is satisfaction. It has to do with coveting. Coveting is when you want something that belongs to another person. We should not wish or desire to have anything that belongs to another person as a result of greed or selfishness. We should be satisfied with what we have and always thank God for them. Therefore, we are to show respect; for what belongs to others such as a person’s wife or property. REASONS WHY GOD GAVE THE TEN COMMANDMENTS The law does not save us. The following are the reasons why God gave the Ten Commandments. • For the personal wellbeing of His people. • To serve as a foundation for the nation of Israel. • To remind the people of their own sinfulness. • It reminds us of how much we need God’s forgiveness for salvation. REWARDS FOR KEEPING GOD’S COMMANDMENTS The following are the rewards of keeping God’s commandments. • Long life: We will live long if we obey Him (Deuteronomy 32:46 – 47). • Protection: God will protect us (Romans 8:28). • Gladness: Obedience to God brings joy and gladness (Acts 2:4). • Peace: Peace that comes from God (Psalm 119; 168). • Assurance of salvation: (1 John 3:24). • Answers to prayers. SCHOOL RULES These are rules and regulations at school that pupils and staff should obey. School rules and regulations aim to make pupils aware of the value of self-control, orderliness and the need to cultivate a sense of responsibility for their own conduct. Failure to obey them brings punishment. Some examples of such rules and regulations for pupils and students are: • Coming early and regularly to school. • Sweeping the classroom, the staff rooms, and the school compound regularly. • Taking part in the morning assembly. • Respecting and obeying the teachers, prefect and class monitor. • Obeying the bell promptly and at all times. • Not quarreling and fighting in the school premises. • No noise-making in the class and paying attention when the teacher is teaching. • No cheating during examinations. • No stealing of things including school property. • Taking part in sports and games. • Dressing properly. • Not being absent from school without goods reasons. • Not joining secret cult. • No damage to school property. FOR THE TEACHERS • They should be punctual to school. • They must submit their daily lesson plan promptly. • They must show good examples to the pupils in everything. IMPORTANCE OF SCHOOL RULES AND REGULATIONS The following are the importance of school rules: • Helps to bring peace, progress and development in the school. • Help pupils to be disciplined. • Enables pupils to remain focused and excel in their academics. • They act as useful guide that helps prevent unwanted punishment. • It helps in classroom control/management. • It helps to create good relationship between the teachers and students. • It helps in the smooth running of the school. • It helps the student’s life in order to make them useful in the society. MORAL LESSONS • God wants his children to love and worship him alone. • God is angry when we swear falsely and curse or use his name in vain. • God expects us to obey his laws. • We should listen to our parents and respect them. • Christians should not watch films that bring bad thoughts to their mind to do evil. • We are to love others as ourselves. • The law will help us to establish good relationship with God and one another. • Obedience to the commandments brings about peace, order and progress in the society.
