Marriage is the legal union of a man and a woman as husband and wife. We can also say that marriage is a legal union of a man and a woman after customary rites so that they become husband and wife, live together and have children. It is one of the five major institutions in the society and one that ensures that the society does not die through the reproduction of young ones.
Biblically, it is a covenant relationship between a man and a woman to share their lives and family responsibilities together.

Purposes of Marriage
Marriage serves many purposes in the society, some which include:
• Means of Setting up a Family: Once a man and a woman are married in the way that is approved by the society, they become a family.
• Procreation: Precreation means the production of young ones or children. It is in marriage that man and woman are approved to have children.
• Sexual Satisfaction: Sexual satisfaction is achieved in marriage. It is important to stress that it is only the two key partners in marriage (i.e. husband and wife), that can experience sexual satisfaction in marriage. All other members of the family are not allowed to do so by culture.
• Legitimate Status for Children: Marriage provides a socially approved situation for child bearing and child rearing enabling a man and woman (i.e. husband and wife) to have children that have legitimate status in the family, community and in the society. Children produced outside wedlock are regarded as illegitimate.
• Responsible Indigenes for Parents: One other purpose of marriage is to acquire the status of responsible indigenes for husband and wife. This accords them respect and a social status in the society.
• Economic Cooperation: Marriage promotes economic cooperation at the household level, which affects the society positively.
• Socialization: Marriage is a platform through which a family is formed. Therefore, through marriage, adults as well as children all go through the process of socialization.
• Satisfying Economic and Social Needs: These include need for food, clothing, education, belongs to a family, etc.
• Ensure Mutual Love: Marriage makes it possible for two adults (that is, the man and woman) to grow in mutual love for each other.
Functions of Marriage
Marriage has important roles to play in the lives of those in it. Some of the functions of marriage are:
• For Procreation: To procreation means to give birth to children. Procreation is to bring new life into being through marriage. God created man in his own image and likeness. He gave man the ability to procreate or bring new life into existence. After creating Adam and Eve, God blessed them and gave them the power to be fruitful and multiply. So through them, other human beings came to life.
• To have a helper: In order that man will not be alone in life. God created the woman (wife) to help him.
• For love and affection: To provide love and affection which are important for life. This help to promote unity among families and also to make them live together in peace. Above all, to make them live long.
• For companionship: A companion is one who stays and keeps one companion. The man and the woman need each other for companionship and for both of them to be best of friends.
• Safe sex: Marriage makes sex legal and safe. It prevents sexually transmitted infections (STI). Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Human immune-deficiency virus (HIV) and Acquired immune-deficiency syndrome (AIDS) as it helps to reduce illegal sexual relationship.
• For the women to have ‘head’: For a woman to have honor in life. She is needs to have a husband as her head. A man is the honor of a woman has in life. The husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church, according to the Bible book of Ephesians 5:23
• For pleasure: God instituted marriage for sexual pleasure and satisfaction.
• Prevent pre-marital sex: Pre-marital sex is the act of a male and female who are not married or are yet to be married involving or indulging themselves in sexual relationship. God is against this act. Paul advised unmarried people to be married if they cannot avoid sex before marriage. (1 Corinthians 7:7-9)
• Responsibility: Marriage goes with some responsibilities. The father, mother and children have some roles to play for things to move on well. For example, it is the duty of both parents to be faithful to each other. The father being the head of the home take care the wife and children.
• Marriage can help prevent STDs/HIV/AIDS.
