A group is a number of people or things that are put together or considered as a unit. Group behavior is the way a group of people with similar goals behave, which might be different from how they would normally behave if they were alone or as individuals.
A group behavior distinguishes it from other groups.
Types of Group Behavior
There are different types of group behavior in the society. Some of these include:
• Mass Action: This is the behavior that happens by chance among people in different places who come together to express a preference to or a grievance against a given social situation.
The characteristics of a mass action are:
a) It is spontaneous, i.e. those who are involved do not plan for it. It happens by chance.
b) It is undertaken by people in different geographical locations.
c) It is a reaction against a common social situation in the society.
d) These people in different geographical location react in the same way.

• Communal Labor: Communal labor refers to work that is undertaken by members of a community to improve the welfare of members of the community. During communal labor, people come out en mass to work together so as to achieve a common purpose in the community.
• Pressure Group: This is an association of people who do the same type of work and who act together to influence public opinion and public policy in the interest of the group and its members.
• Demonstration: This is a public march in support of, or against what is happening now or what is proposed to happen in the future. A demonstration can be for or against an action or a proposed action.
• Protect: This is a public march against an action or a proposed action. It can also be a letter or a write-up against an action or a proposed action. A protest is done physically or in writing and is also against an action or proposed action.
Characteristics of Different Types of Group Behaviors
Group behavior, like other things of life, can be good or bad. It can be good if it leads to reforms or changes that have beneficial effects on the society and its members. When this happens, we say that the group behavior is constructive or positive in function because it has led to a favorable outcome in society.
For example, a demonstration or protect can lead to a policy that ensures:
• Free education
• Building of industries
• Provision of better security;
• Provision of social amenities e.g. electricity potable water, health centers:
Such group behavior can be sustained so that its favorable effects or outcomes will continue in the society leading to abundance of development.
On the other hand, a group behavior can be bad if it has bad effects on the society. In this case, we say that such group behavior is destructive or negative to the society because their function has led to an unfavorable consequence in the society.
For example, a demonstration or protest can lead to some or all of the following effects or outcomes:
• Death of people
• Obstruction of public highways,
• Molestation of innocent citizens;
• Destruction of public or private property;
• Burning of houses;
• Raping of young girls, etc.
Benefits of Positive Group Behavior

• Companionship: Positive group behavior leads to companionship. The people involved in the behavior become united, share their problems and victories as they put aside their differences. This brings mutual benefits to all concerned and the society at large.
• Survival and Security: Positive group behavior always leads to the survival of members of society and the security of their property. For example, during emergency situation, help come quickly or action is taken speedily to stop a bad situation from getting worse.

• Affiliation and Status: Positive group behavior accords an individual the opportunity to associate with others who may be of a different status or class.
• Power and Control: Positive group behavior makes members of the group powerful and to have the ability to change the course of an event. For example, a government may be forced to change some of the policies and programs that do not benefit the people if the people speak in one voice.
