General Objectives of Social Studies

Social studies deal with human life in a social environment. It focuses on the study of how man lives in the society, what he does and how his life is influenced by the things around his environment. It is also concerned with the study of man’s interactions with his physical and social environments. Social studies have therefore become an important course of study in educational institutions.
The general objectives of social studies include the following:
Develops in Students the Ability to Adapt to Changing Environment: Social studies teach students to be aware of their immediate environment and how to solve problems that may threaten its peace and progress. Students will know that they are living in a dynamic and changing world, which requires adaptation to live a good life. It enables students to also know the difficulties and benefits of living in a society with diverse cultures, languages and religion.
To Inculcates in Students National Consciousness and National Unity: Social studies serve as a means of developing patriotism in students. It trains students on how to live in peace with one another in the society. It makes students to realize the benefits of serving others. This would help in sustaining national unity for a country as diverse as Nigeria.
Grooms and Produces Good Citizens, Capable of and willing to contribute to the Development of the society: Social studies teach students how to acquire necessary skills to perform their social and civic duties. It stimulates the interest of students to participate in public affairs. Students are urged to uphold the virtues of hard work, commitment and honesty for their own benefit and growth of society. Social studies train students on the need to help others and tolerate them as good citizens.
Inculcates in students the Right Types of Values: Students are able to develop a sense of commitment and responsibility to their society. Social studies teach students how to show respect to others in spite of differences in language, religion and cultural belief. The positive attitudes of honesty, fairness, and justices stimulate a sense of tolerance and cooperation in achieving peace and development in the society.
Helps Students to Acquire Knowledge about the Society: As a course of study, Social studies teach students the social issues and problems confronting man and his environment. Such social issues include abuse of human rights, corruption, crime, human trafficking and poverty. This is to stimulate the understanding of students about challenges facing human society and how to proffer solutions to them. Social studies offer solutions on how to deal with those issues and problems.
Helps Students to Develop Inquiry, Interpersonal and Critical Thinking Skills: Students are able to think in a logical and critical way. Thinking skills guide students to easily adjust and relate well with others. The skills are also used in collecting interpreting and understanding information for the benefit of the generality of the people.
Importance of Social Studies (stop)
Social studies are of great importance in the following ways:
It teaches good behavior in an independent world: Social studies teach people how to behave in a world comprising of diverse people with different cultures, languages, value system and religions. It makes us to be aware that people depend on one another to survive and live in peace. This makes students to be responsible in their interactions with others.
It offers opportunity to discuss issues: Social studies makes it possible for students to discuss social problems that face people at the family, community, national and international levels; and the efforts being made by leaders to solve them. This enables students to work towards the protection of their environment. Social studies thus encourage our participation in social and civic duties.
It teaches the cultures of various communities: Social studies teach the cultures of various communities. This enables students learn how to respect the way of life others. In addition, students learn to respect their leaders.
It enriches our lives with knowledge: Social studies teach various issues affecting human life. Students have an opportunity to acquire knowledge of their past, understand the present and improve on the future. The knowledge assists students to know their responsibilities to the communities, and thereby live a better life as a responsible citizen.
It deals with global issues affecting the country: social studies enable the students to understand Nigeria as well as the role of Nigeria in the international community. Such issues include climate change (global waning), insurgency, and food crisis and health problem.
It helps in the making of sound discussions: Social studies create in the students the right awareness to make decisions that would allow for national decisions for the common good of the society.
