Conditions of Marriage By Eguriase S. M. Okaka Marriage is a very important institution in every society; hence people are encouraged to marry for the continuity and progress of the society. However, there are conditions that ought to be satisfied by people who intend to marry. If those conditions are not met, people do not give their support for the marriage to hold. Conditions for marriage include:  Physiological fitness: Marriage is for those who are physiologically or biologically fit, because after marriage, people are expected to bear children. If people going into marriage, especially women are not physiologically mature, child bearing will be risky. This is why underage people or people who are not physiologically fit are not encouraged to marry.
 Psychological fitness: Marriage is not only concerned with development of the human body. It is also concerned with the development of the human mind because the body and the mind work together for the betterment of the individual. One of the conditions for marriage is that the person must have a well developed mind and be able to reason well. For example, he or she must be able to understand himself or herself, regulate or control his or her actions and attitudes and know how to motivate himself or herself to take certain action.  Social stability: Something that tends to marry must also be socially stable. This means that he or she must be able to understand the feeling of his or her partner and show concern for him or her. The marriage partners should be able to communicate and trust one another as well as show love and care for each other.  Financial Readiness: A person who wants to marry should be financially ready. They must have a means of livelihood because money is needed to run the upkeep of the home and also plan for the future. Effects of Lack of Readiness on a Marriage Relationship If people go into a marriage without fulfilling the necessary conditions of marriage, the effects are always bad. Some of the effects are: • Inability to afford necessities: If people enter into marriage when they are not ready, especially, if they are not financially ready, they may not be able to afford the necessary things that they need. This will inconvenience them a lot and affect their adjustment to each other negatively. • Constant fighting/instability: Marriage between people who are not ready results in constant fighting and instability. This creates so much tension not only for those in the marriage, but also for their relations. • Separation: If people marry without being ready, tension follows. If this tension goes on unchecked, the husband and his wife may be separated. Separation is a situation in which a husband and his wife live apart, while still legally married. It is dangerous for the family, especially the children. • Divorce: If people marry without being ready, this leads to divorce, a situation in which the husband and wife are no longer in marriage but have gone their separate ways. • Death: If people marry without being ready, the tension that follows it may lead to the death of one partner or the couple. Nobody will wish that any marriage should fail for any reason, therefore, the above conditions should be adhere to strictly so that we can achieve sucess in the marriage. Those planing to go into marriage should follow the above conditions before taking the marriage oath to avoid breakage in the marriage on the long run. Questions: • Mention any three conditions for marriage. • Is it good for people to be ready before marriage? • Give any two reasons for your answer to the questions above. • Take part in a mock marriage in which the partners are not financially ready.
