Where there is no assistant director
the Stage Manager(SM) takes the responsibility of the assistant director to
assist the director in all aspect of his work as the director may instruct him.
In addition to this, the stage manager must carry out the following duties:
1.
Obtain
a ground plan and mark the rehearsal area before the first rehearsal.
2.
Mark
his working script with cues for sound, light, curtains etc, as soon as such
cues are set.
3.
Attend
all rehearsals to know the production well and familiar with the cast.
4.
Identify
problems early enough in order to find solution to them just in time. The stage
manager should be able to stand the show scene by scene and Act by Act.
5.
Make
sure the cast know who you are and understand your responsibility as the stage
manager.
6.
Teach
your cast security and safety consciousness and how to apply fire extinguisher
where necessary.
7.
When
the technical rehearsal begins he should check the readiness of show every
night.
8.
Retain
high sense of discipline in himself and among the cast.
9.
The
stage manager must be at the theatre before any other at the night of
rehearsal. Cast members must check in at least thirty minutes before the
curtain goes up.
10. All necessary materials and cast must
be in position at least ten minutes to the opening.
11. The stage manager takes control of
the production after the opening night.
