THE BENEFITS OF READING
BY EGURIASE S. M. OKAKA There is a popular saying by some educated elites who knew the implications of the word reading and the various benefits that students could derive from reading their books. ‘Readers are leaders’, my teacher will always whispers that fact to me. That is really true but not many believed this. I have encountered many who told me that much learning or reading can make one mad. What an insight! I never agreed with them in anyways, because that is their myopic views about the subject matter. Reading is the activity or skill of understanding written or printed words. It is the art, which, if not mastered, will almost certainly make children encounter difficulty through their schooling life. Even if such struggle to leave school, they enter the labor world lacking the skills they need to find a job and develop financial independence in order to take their places as parents and workers. A reader benefits a lot from reading. A child who develops strong reading skills will end up reading millions of words than a struggling reader. It gives such a child an outstanding advantage in knowledge and vocabulary. He or she understands life more and this knowledge will propel him/her through college and into life. The more you acquire more vocabulary, the more you are able to infer the meaning of more words by reading the context of the other words. Reading builds self-confidence because of the knowledge it allows people to acquire. More confidence builds self-esteem. New ideas are discovered and with this come more information and more creativity. Reading is a fundamental skill builder and a window into other cultures. There is no good course on this planet that has not got a matching book to go with it. This is because books assist in clarifying difficult subjects. Reading these books provides information that extends further than just classroom discussion. By reading, a person thinks better and smarter. The information gathered from books can expand your horizons about what impresses you about their culture that is worth seeing. Many studies show that if you don’t use your memory, you lose it. Crossword puzzles have been suggested as an example of a word game that may prevent Alzheimer’s disease – a degenerative disorder that affects the brain. Reading therefore, stretches your memory in the same manner muscles are stretched during physical exercise.
Reading improves creativity, gives you something to talk about and allows you to learn at your own pace. Reading more books exposes you to new information. Hence it allows you to generate more creative ideas. Reading also gives you the ability to always engage in meaningful discourse. Couples, friends and business partners can learn from one another because they have new information at their disposal. Books can also be at convenient hours of the day. Therefore you can learn at your own pace. Reading also allows you to build your expertise – to become an expert in your chosen field especially if you have read up to 100 books in your fields. . I shall conclude this write up by telling you a story. There was a king who sent one of his soldiers to give his commander a letter in the battle field asking him to put this soldier in the hottest part of the battle so that they would kill him. The letter states that this very soldier who bears the letter should be killed that is what was written in it? He carried it to the commander in the battle field and gave it to him without reading what he carried. The commander read it and subsequently obeyed the king’s instruction and the soldier was put in the hottest part of the battle field that was where he was killed. The mistake that the soldier did was that he did not read the letter that he was carrying. That is exactly what is happening to many students today. They can’t read that is why they don’t know the important information they are carrying with them. This information is written in the various textbooks they are carrying to school. They contain knowledge. They have the ability to make you great. Every student should learn how to read their books.
