COSTUME / MAKE-UP Costumes are generally cloths actors put on in the theatre. Costumes are cloths appropriate for a character in a play. It is also refers to as accessories worn by actors or character as the case may be, e.g. accessories   such as hats, earring, wrist watches, necklaces, etc. Generally, they are anything worn which is not cloths. Anything worn by any actor on stage and not put in use by the actor should not go on stage. It means that every items or accessories with actors on stage should be put to use within the duration of that scene. Make-up comes in liquid or solid form. They are often applied to body parts not covered by cloth that is going to be exposed. ELEMENTS OF THEATRE Theatre is a collaborative art which is based on performance (acting). It is derived from the Greek word ‘Theatron’ which means a place of seeing. That is where the word came from. Note that when you hear the word theatre you hear the word performance because theatre is all about performance. Everybody whether directly or indirectly is involved in theatre or one form of performance or the other, in our everyday routine we perform or act. BRIEF HISTORY OF DIRECTING THE 18 TH CENTURY The 18 th century brought interest in directing or acting and interpretation of characters. Production was only considered good with the performer’s leading roles at presentation. At that time it also advances in technology which means that the audiences came to the theatre for a visual experience rather than a strictly literary one. Spectators were awed and excited by the lighting system on stage design the rediscovery of the Roman city of Pompeii in something approaching the modern director emerged. SWEET MOTHER BY PRINCE NICO MBAGA ANALYSIS BY EGURIASE S.M. OKAKA In the early 1980s Prince Nico Mbaga a high life singer from equatorial Guinea stormed the Nigeria music scene with a thought provoking album track titled “SWEET MOTHER.” I was in my tens when I first heard this song from this great singer. This music was a bomb which exploded and unfolded the importance of motherhood to the world. Nico Mbaga narrated the story of motherhood and stylishly shows us the sufferings which mothers go though when rearing their children. His narration also gave hope to the would-be mothers. This is one of the best of Africa music that told the story of a complete Africa mother.   Indeed, this is one story told in the language that all can relate with that is, the pigin English.             Nico seized the opportunity to tell the world of his experience and sufferings his mother went through in bring him up.
