Argumentative Essay
By Eguriase S. M. Okaka An argumentative essay has two sides. This means that you argue either for or against the proposition or motion. This type of essay is not meant for oral delivery before an audience. It is not a debate. Examples of Argumentative Essay Questions • Write an argument in support or against the proposition: ‘Parents should choose careers for their children’. • Write an argument for or against the proposition ‘The boy-child is more important in the home than the girl-child.’ • ‘A teacher is more important to our society than a doctor.’ write your arguments in support of or against the proposition. • ‘Co-education is better than the single-sex school.’ Write your arguments for or against the proposition. • Write your arguments for or against the proposition. ‘A farmer is more important than a trader to the community. Features of Argumentative Essay • You do not start your essay by greeting any audience because there is no audience. • You must take a side or stand. This means you argue either for or against the proposition. • Do not conclude by writing ‘Thank you for listening’. • As in a debate you do a thorough research of your topic before writing so as to have strong point. • Remember that all argumentative essays are based on facts that are verifiable. Leave out your personal opinions. • Make use of connectives or linking words and phrases to make your arguments more effectives. • Pay attention to the standard structure of every essay: introduction, body and conclusion. • Remember that the purpose of an argumentative essay is to persuade the reader to adopt your own viewpoints. Below is an argumentative essay on the topic: ‘A teacher is more important in our society than a doctor.’ Read carefully and take note of the features of an argumentative essay. Also take note of the introduction, body, conclusion and the use of linking devices. A Teacher is more important than a Doctor in our Society How many of us students would like to be in school for five days in a week without a teacher? How many prefer to be in the hospital with a doctor instead of being in school? How many people learned to read and write without the help of a teacher? A teacher, is definitely important than a doctor to our society. Below are my reasons: Firstly, a teacher teaches everyone in the society – nursery school pupils, secondary school students, university undergraduates. Even postgraduate students are all taught by teachers. All literate people, both young and old, were taught by teachers. The doctors are not left out; they also were taught by teachers. A society without teacher is doomed. Secondly, everyone knows that doctors are also important to our society in that they treat the sick. However, without the teachers, doctors would not have been able to acquire that knowledge that made them become doctors. Doctors attended schools where they were taught by teachers. Thirdly, teachers are positive role models for the pupils they teach. The pupils look up to them in many ways and they learn a lot from them since they spend more time with them than with their parents. There is usually a strong bond between the pupil and their teachers. Doctors spend only few minutes with people and that is only when they are sick. There is no bond between children or adults and the doctors. In fact, children generally fear doctors because they believe they will give them injections or make them swallow bitter drugs. The teacher, by interacting with children on daily basis help to mound them to become good citizens and future leaders. In conclusion, from the point raised in this essay, it can be clearly seen that a teacher is more important than a doctor to our society. By Eguriase S. M. Okaka
