THE DIVINER (A STORY) BY EGURIASE S. M. OKAKA Once upon a time in the village of Edel, things were booming, life was fair to the formers and the entire villagers. The rains were falling as at when due. The villagers were all happy and friendly with each other. The King and his elders in council were having a good time; as tubes of yams, bush meats, and other items were coming in great quantum.   But suddenly there appears a DROUGHT in the land. What happened? Some say it was the handiwork of the devil. Others said the monkey has just given birth to a human being. Well, this is an unusual occurrence that needs explanation. The rains ceased as the heavens withheld its showers. What went wrong nobody knows not even me telling the story. The villagers did not know what to do. Plants cannot grow as crops were dying off because of the drought. They were patient and expectant for two seasons. All the grasses became desert, this made the animals grow thinner and thinner a...

HUBERT OGUNDE – WHO IS HE? Hubert Ogunde was born in 1916 in the village of Ososa four miles from ijebu-Ode in western state of Nigeria. He worked as a teacher before joining the Nigeria Police Force. He later left the police force to join the theatre world with his first play titled: “THE GARDEN OF EDEN” and later followed by “THE THRONE OF GOD” in 1944. These plays launched him into active theatrical productions. His play The Garden of Eden and The Throne of God were commissioned by the church of the Lord Cherubim and Seraphim based in Lagos Nigeria. The performance was in aid of the church building fund but later grew into a big theatrical venture for him. The huge success of the foregoing productions spurred Ogunde on to writing more operas until he decided to leave, quite unlike his contemporaries, his amateur status as an artist and turn professional. By this act Ogunde began the rise of modern professional theatre in Nigeria: a movement in which he remains the supreme art...

HORACE THOUGHT ON DRAMA BY EGURIASE S.M OKAKA             Horace was not a student of Aristotle he loved and read his work. Not much is stated of him but his thoughts on drama is worthy of note. Here we shall consider some important tips. HIS THOUGHT ON DRAMA INCLUDES: 1.      You must be a good student of drama 2.      Artists are not born but they are made 3.      Natural talent must be supported by good education 4.      The ultimate purpose of drama is to give pleasure to life 5.      Drama must teach wisdom and entertain: the wisdom you get from reading the play is the profit while the delight is the entertainment you get 6.      Use people around you to write. Copy from the events around and draw from your own society. It is that a writer should write within the scope of human understanding...

the trial of brother jero by wole soyinka

TRIAL OF BROTHER JERO BY WOLE SOYINKA ANALYSIS BY EGURIASE S. M. OKAKA The play begins with Jeroboam in a monologue introducing himself as a Prophet. A prophet by birth and by inclination. All these and others he said in the introductory part of the play. He also distinguished himself from other prophets of his time by red velvet cap which he always put on as a mark of distinction. The beginning plot also reveals most events and characters in the play. Examples include the penitent woman and the Daughters of Discords who serve as Brother Jero’s sad troubles. The daughters of discords serve as the prophet’s tragic flaw as he often sees them as agents of his distraction and temptation. They are his cross I conclude. The middle plot reveals the revelation of Jero’s tricks on his worshippers or customers as he always calls them. He once said, I love the trade. (Referring to his office as a prophet) brother Jero has a way of making his customers dissatisfied or withholding solution...

EXAMINATION MALPRACTICE A SOCIAL MALADY     BY   EGURIASE S. M. OKAKA               Examination malpractice is fast becoming a social malady which has eaten deeply into our education system to a very great extent that students no longer trust in their ability to pass exams without the aid of external forces as machineries. These external forces are mostly teachers of the centres where the examinations are conducted, or those who specialize in writing examinations for weak students who have no believe in their ability to pass the simplest examination. Students, teachers, and parents laugh at this and make mockery of such because they know they will go there at least to write their exams. This is a shame! And threat to our reveled Nation because we are breeding half-baked leaders of tomorrow.   If this should be allowed to continue the unborn generation will suffer adversely from the aftermath of ...
