Dangers of Premarital Sex By Eguriase S. M. Okaka Premarital sex is sexual intercourse practiced by individuals who are unmarried. It usually refers to sexual relations between two people prior to marrying each other. In some culture, the term is used instead of fornication due to the negative meaning association with the latter. Some degree of ambiguity has been linked with premarital sex. Some say it is unclear whether sex between individuals who are legally forbidden from marrying or sexual relations between persons uninterested in marrying could be considered premarital. Therefore, alternative names have been suggested, such as youthful sex, adolescent sex, and young adult sex. Premarital sex comes with some tragic consequences – from the physical to the emotional and the spiritual. Premarital sex may open wide the door of distrust and suspicion. Couples may lose their dignity, honor and mutual respect which they could have enjoyed if they had abstained from sex before marriage...

Wole Soyinka the literary guru By Eguriase S. M. Okaka Apart from the great William Shakespeare, the next literacy guru I knew is Wole Soyinka. I read his books in my secondary school education days and again, in my university education as a student of Theatre Arts, at the great University of Benin, Benin City. Wole, was my favorite among other African writers. Let’s learn about living legend. It gives me joy when I studied his works. He is the face of literature in Nigeria and the world knows that too. Wole Soyinka is a black Africa’s foremost dramatist and one of the most controversial and distinguished writers of this generation. As a playwright, actor, producer, poet, film maker, musician, essayist, author of scathing satirical revues (‘Before the Blackout’) and editor, Soyinka has been a champion of the responsibility of art and the artist to society. This has made him a bitter critic of society and the establishment and has involved him in some activist episodes which cost him...

An excursion to Obudu Mountain Resort By Eguriase S. M. Okaka As I waved goodbye to my schoolmates on the early morning of 15th July 2011, I had mixed feelings. On the one hand, I was happy that I was going to see the popular Obudu Mountain Resort and on the other hand, I was sad that my friend Lola was not with me. Our Social Studies teacher, Mrs. Ewang, had wanted all JSS 3 students to go on an excursion to one of Nigeria’s most important natural endowments before our external examination. We left the school as early as 5:00 a.m. as the journey, according to our teacher, would take about six hours from our school in Aba. The journey was smooth and we spent time chatting and enjoying the lovely natural scenery that is missing in Aba town. Many of us had lived all our lives in Aba, so we enjoyed every bit of our journey. We got to Calabar a few minutes before 9:00 a.m. and preceded to Obudu which we were told was about three hundred and thirty-three kilometers from Calabar town. Ou...
